That Positive Mental Attitude Is Your Friend, Not Your Enemy

Admittedly, it is not always to easiest to maintain a positive mental attitude. You turn on the television to catch a bit of the evening news and you hear all the depressing stories about foreclosures, business failures, housing prices slipping, high unemployment, and perhaps you find lots and lots of things that you can start to dwell on that will depress you. It is no wonder why so many people are on anti-depressents because it is easier to take a small pill than to face the onslaught of bad news without it. What can you do? It seems hopeless sometimes.

It isn’t hopeless.

In order to succeed in life, in business, in any venture, you have to find a way to make it work. I am not advocating sticking your head in the sand and dreaming that when you emerge, the world will be a brighter, better place: It doesn’t work that way. I have been guilty of avoiding things, and I am sure that many others have been excellent at that as well. I have found that I have been much happier and much more successful from spending a lot less time watching television and letting it drain my mind and fill it with negative thought. I will occassionally catch the local news for a bit, but I cannot say that it has to be a regular part of my day.

There is so much to do out there that can fill your life with purpose and reward. When I was in college, I was introduced to a steady diet of positive mental attitude literature and tapes by my trumpet instructor and I will still ocassionally pick up on of those books and “recharge” my inner batteries so that I can face the world again. You can do the same thing. Replace a half hour of television watching with a half hour of positive mental attitude reading, listening, or doing. The rewards are immeasurable.
